O Engenhoso Fidalgo Dom Quixote de La Mancha

Migue de Cervantes Saavedra e Gustave Doré

ISBN: 8000001341302

1 750,00€

This is the first monumental edition of The ingenious nobleman Don Quixote of la Mancha in Portuguese and the first with illustrations by Gustave Doré. As Pinheiro Chagas wrote about this literary treasure: "If Lisbon was the first place in the world to reprint Don Quixote, it would be Porto that would reprint it in a more splendid and honourable edition". The work was published in two volumes by the Companhia Litteraria Press. The magnificent story of the adventures of the Castilian nobleman, his madness serving as a satire on the much-loved chivalric romances of the time, would become recognised as a seminal work to the modern novel, inspiring writers such as Daniel Defoe, Herman Melville, or Jorge Luís Borges. With red editorial binding, engraved in gold and black, the two volumes are richly illustrated with 120 drawings by Gustave Doré, engraved by H. Pisan. A book defined by Mario Vargas Llosa as an image, Don Quixote has undergone repeated representations ever since its launch, thanks to the descriptions and episodes recounted by Cervantes that proved such great inspiration for generations of artists. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra is one of the most widely translated authors and this work, considered by many to be the greatest exponent of Spanish literature, contributed greatly to this. In this edition, the Miguel de Cervantes magnum opus is presented in one of the best respected Portuguese translations, with the writer António Feliciano de Castilho one of the main contributors.
