Contemporânea

José Pacheco

ISBN: 0000000002982

3 300,00€

A complete collection of the important literary and artistic magazine Contemporanea, with its masses of pages of history unveiling to their readers the effervescent cultural atmosphere of the first half of the 20th century. The texts, some of them hitherto unpublished, are written by the greatest figures of Portuguese Modernism: Almada Negreiros, António Botto, Fernando Pessoa, José Régio, Mário de Sá-Carneiro and their peers portray this effervescent but restless generation. Issue 7 of the magazine, for example, includes A cena do ódio by Almada Negreiros, a poem written over three days and three nights. The set retains its original paperback bindings and furthermore represents an important repository of the period’s art and graphic design. Its first issue came out in 1915, the same year as that of the Orpheu magazine, and it would only achieve consolidation in 1922. Contemporanea, under the direction of José Pacheko, was a leading publication that spans the transition period between the modernism of the Orpheu generation (1915) and the second modernism marked by the magazine Presença (1927-1940).
